Helm Walter E. Helm, age 90, of Columbus, died Saturday, January 2, 2016. He was born April 12, 1925 to the late Ernest and Elizabeth Helm. Walter was a 1943 graduate of Aquinas High School and served in the United States Marine Corp during WWII as an airplane mechanic.
He will be remembered as a perfectionist who could build or fix anything and as never meeting a sweet he didn't like. Walter also loved participating in sports especially swimming, bowling and golf. Upon leaving the Marine Corp he joined the family business and became co-owner of Helm Florist with his brother. Walter later joined Nationwide Children's Hospital and retired after 16 years of dedicated service and was a lifetime member of their golf league. Of his many friends he especially appreciated the ones he met through Boy Scout Troop #25 who even after 79 years still met monthly at Planks.
Walter was preceded in death by brother Donald Helm, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Terrie and Paul Wilson, brothers-in-law Harvey Hauer and Robert Finneran. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jeanne; children, Larry (Sharon) Helm, Kathleen (John Bychowski) Helm-Bychowski and Colleen Helm; grandchildren, Meaghan (Jesus Mena) Bychowski, Brenna Bychowski, Scott Patrie and Margaret Walsh; great grandchildren, Charlotte Mena, Christopher Patrie and family, and Jozlyn Walsh; sisters-in-law, Mary Anne Hauer, Nancy Finneran and Gail Helm; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHEAST CHAPEL, 1051 E. Johnstown Rd. A mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 807 Havens Corners Road, Gahanna, OH. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. The family wishes to acknowledge the personal care given to Walter by the staff at Mother Angeline McCrory Manor and any memorial donations to the facility would be appreciated.
